Make Car Tires Last By Practicing Tire Rotation

Are you disturbed because you seem to burn out your car’s tires fast?

Do your front tires wear and tear quicker than your tires at the back? That’s just normal, says a friend of mine who recently purchased a truck from a local
car dealer
, but you can prevent your tires from unevenly wasting away by doing a simple trick – tire rotation.

No, we’re not talking about “spinning” the tires. Tire rotation is just about the same as a “tire swap”. Basically, it’s exchanging your rear tires with your front tires so as to distribute the “wear-and-tear” process evenly that all tires have to eventually go through.

And before you freak out about having to have your tires purposefully worn out, there’s a reason for it. Tires that have been worn out evenly can work miracles in a car’s performance, if only for the fact that it helps in providing a reliable and long-term performance consistency that we, car owners, are always expecting out of our vehicles.

Getting an even tire wear is recommended so that the overall performance of your car will be consistent. This is difficult to achieve if one set of tires are more worn out than the other. And since the tires waste away at approximately similar rates, tire rotation also adds longevity to the tread of your vehicle.

Why do front tires wear at a greater rate than rear?

A buyer from a GM dealer confirmed these long-standing suspicions of yours truly: While all car tires do have to wear out, the front tires receive most of the pressure that we drivers are wont to inflict on our vehicles with nary a care—namely, curve turning, parallel parking, and three point turns, among others. It’s mind-boggling to think that something that we consider as banal can inflict some major damage on a single tire.

So how can we rotate car tires?

Like the young Padawan asking advice from a Jedi Master, a GMC dealer client had told me the four “tenets” that are involved in tire rotation. Please take note that these are only applicable to standard four-wheel drives:

1. Swap the front-left tire with the rear-left tire, the front-right to the rear-right, and then put the rear-right to the front-left, and the rear-left to the front-right.

2. Placing the rear-left tire to the front-left tire, rear-right to the front-right, and transferring the front-right tire to the rear-left tire, and the front-left tire to the rear-right.

3. Exchanging the front-left tire with the rear-right tire and conversely, the front-right tire with the rear-left tire.

4. You can also swap the front-left tire with the rear-left, and the front-right with rear-right tire.

When do we know if our tires need a rotation?

My friend, who regularly purchases with a nearby car dealer, suggested that swapping tires should be observed after clocking 3,000 miles on the road. Others, however, aren’t that strict and even state that tire rotation is necessary only when your car had travelled a total of 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Both agree that whenever you deemed that it is the right time for tire rotation, you should proceed with it even if there are no overt signs of your front tires wearing out.

One automotive specialist, who also bought from a local
gmc dealer
, opined that rotating tires can be quite useless, if you don’t put the right pressure on your tires. To determine the right inflation for your car’s rubber soul, check your manufacturer’s manual. You can also check the guide if it recommends an interval when you should shift your tires.

A GM dealer customer had never said it better to me: It may be hard work, but consider the money you’ll be spending if you ever find yourself seeing your car towed away because of a single tire blow-out. With that said, since summer is already here, what better way to spend it (aside from the beach or the woods, of course) than to dirty your hands by changing the tires and ensuring that you enjoy the rest of the year on a very smooth and hassle-free ride? It’s hard to argue with that, don’t you think? So get your car jacks out and start rotating.

You can also have your tires rotated at your favorite
gm dealer
. Visit their service department now and inquire of their tire rotation service.
